Outlander author Diana Gabaldon has just unveiled the title of her final book, but it's a bittersweet revelation for fans of the epic romance.

The saga of Jamie (portrayed by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe), which began in Gabaldon's novels, is set to return to television screens for its eighth instalment later this year.

Adding to the anticipation, there's another treat in store: author Gabaldon's 10th and concluding novel of the beloved series.

The author took to Facebook to reveal the title of the last book, A Blessing For A Warrior Going Out, assuring fans that "No, that doesn't mean Jamie's going to die."

Gabaldon elaborated on the significance of the title, stating: "It's not a death blessing, it's the Blessing of St. Michael, said for a warrior about to go and do something important and possibly dangerous.

"There are quite a few people in this book who qualify for that blessing, believe me.."

To whet readers' appetites further, Gabaldon shared a tantalising snippet from the start of the forthcoming novel.

The preview of A Blessing For A Warrior Going Out sets the scene "post-wedding" with William making an entrance, initially only noticed by Fanny.

In this concluding volume, it's evident that Jamie is no longer as physically fit as he once once, as its described: "Jamie rose slowly from his chair on the porch-not using his stick, I saw-and drew himself up, eyes fixed on William."

William arrives "mud-spattered, windblown and breathing hard" on his steed, urgently informing Jamie, "I need your help".

The narrative details the father-son moment as it unfolds: "He reached William and put a hand on his arm.

"'You have it,' he said simply. 'Come in.'".

Gabaldon, who has announced the title of the new Outlander installment on Jamie star Sam Heughan's birthday, clarified that while the book is not yet complete with no release date in sight, she does know how it will end.

Unfortunately, the novel A Blessing For A Warrior Going Out will never make its way onto the screen.

The curtain is set to fall on the Outlander series on MGM+ later this year or possibly in early 2026 following season eight, with production coming to a close in September 2024.

Therefore, whatever finale Gabaldon envisions for her 10th book, it shall stay exclusive to the written word.

Outlander is available to watch on MGM+.
