3 Reasons RR Lost To MI IPL 2025: The Mumbai Indians defeated the Rajasthan Royals by 100 runs after putting up a target of 218 in Match 50 of the Indian Premier League 2025. The match was played on Thursday, May 1, at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
The Rajasthan Royals have now become the second team to be eliminated from IPL 2025. They kicked their season off with back-to-back losses against SRH and KKR, which was followed by wins over CSK and PBKS. RR then lost five in a row, against GT, RCB, DC, LSG, and RCB again, most of them by close margins. On the brink of elimination, they defeated GT in historic fashion in their most recent game before tonight, where they lost to MI. With three wins, six points, and an awful net run rate, the Royals are eighth on the points table.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Indians are the team with the best form in IPL 2025. They lost four out of their first five matches this season, against CSK, GT, LSG, and RCB, their only win at that point coming against KKR. Since then, the five-time champions have won six games in a row against DC, SRH, CSK, SRH, LSG, and now RR. With seven wins, 14 points, and the best net run rate in the competition, the Indians are at the top of the league table.
Today, we will look back at three reasons why RR, whose batting looked like a million bucks in their last game, lost this match at home.
The Mumbai Indians’ opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton finally clicked today. While the two have been in decent form in recent games, both batters have not fired at the same match so far in IPL 2025. Well, today in the Pink City, this opening duo was about to erupt.
Rohit and Rickelton were taking their time in the first few overs. But about the time the powerplay came to an end, the two gathered up steam and picked the pace up, scoring 58 runs in the first powerplay. This was only the second time this season that MI lost no wickets in the first six overs.
The two went on to score half-centuries, while the partnership took the Indians past the 100-run mark. By the time Rickelton had gotten out for 61 off 38 balls, the team score was 116/1 towards the end of the 12th over. In the very next over, Sharma was dismissed after scoring 53 runs in 36 deliveries.
The two openers not only scored big runs together for the first time this season, but they also provided the base for Suryakumar Yadav and captain Hardik Pandya to take the away team well past 200 runs in this Rajasthan Royals vs Mumbai Indians match.

This season hasn’t belonged to the RR bowling line-up. While the batting has given this team some memorable moments, the bowling attack has not been up to par, as was feared for this side ahead of IPL 2025. Tonight was no different, as every full-time bowler was taken to the cleaners.
Jofra Archer bowled a great first over but was immediately taken off the attack. His second over was for 18 runs. And while he finished his spell well, he still conceded 42 runs in four without taking any wickets. Fazalhaq Farooqi was even more expensive, with his figures after four overs being 0/54. The third overseas bowler, Maheesh Theekshana, looked good in bits and even took a wicket, but gave away 47 runs in four overs.
The most impressive bowler for Rajasthan Royals, apart from captain Ruyan Parag, who gave 12 runs in two overs and dismissed Rohit Sharma, was Akash Madhwal. The pacer was playing his first match of the season. After a wayward start to his bowling, he finally found his rhythm towards the end. So, despite conceding 39 runs in four overs and taking no wickets, Madhwal looked brilliant in the last over of the inning, before he conceded a six on the last ball. This took MI to 217 runs while batting first in this Rajasthan Royals vs Mumbai Indians match.

A target of 218 was not too different from the one of 210 RR chased in their last match, especially the way they chased it down in 16 overs. But the story of the Royals’ chase was going to be very different today.
The centurion from the last match, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, was dismissed for a duck today when he was caught at mid-off in the very first over. His opening partner, Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is in the race for the Orange Cap, was bowled in the very next over by Trent Boult after hitting two sixes.
Next was Nitish Rana, who got a lifeline when he was dropped by wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton in the third over but was caught out in the fourth. Riyan Parag played a few decent strokes before becoming Jasprit Bumrah’s first victim. And then, on the very next ball, Bumrah dismissed Shimron Hetmyer for a golden duck.
At the end of the powerplay, Rajasthan had scored 62 runs, which is great until one shifts their eye to the wickets column, which displayed five. After such a disastrous start to their innings, there was no chance of a comeback. Dhruv Jurel and Shubahm Dubey were dismissed for being cheap, too. However, the team was taken past the 100-run mark because of their highest run scorer of the match, that being Jofra Archer, who scored 30 off 27.
